Entering year 6 at Steel Town Cycles – We sell bikes too!

As many of you will know we are a family owned and run bike shop. Based in Blackhill near Consett, County Durham. 01207258270. We have gained a reputation for quality Service and Repairs on all kinds of cycles from your Kids first bike to a treasured High specification Road bike. We’ve also recently got our qualifications for work on Bosch and Shimano eBike systems. We can of course work on other eBikes not using these systems.

We are more than that; Advice , Custom builds, arts and accessories. Our latest addition, as some may have seen in our Facebook posts New bike sales and some curated Refurbished bikes. Currently most are clients bikes that they wish to sell on.

The Brands we have chosen to Stock are all UK based heritage companies; Dawes, Claud Butler and the fantastic Squish lightweight kids bikes. We currently have a small stock of all. Hybrid, MTB and Gravel bikes come in and see them. We hope to continue growing our offerings but we need your support. Like you’ve amazed us by allowing us to care for your bikes. We can also support you in your new bike purchase. Making sure that you have the correct bike for your intended riding. An MTB isn’t necessarily the best choice for riding the bridleways.

Hybrids have a reputation for being a bit dull, this isn’t the case with many being the perfect all rounder. Now featuring Disc brakes for more sure stopping wider tyres for increased riding comfort, with or without Suspension Fork. They can be used on bridleways tracks and road. With gearing to suit multiple terrain. We have a Claud Butler EXP 2.0 in stock £549, that’s a lot of bike for a small price. It’s not lacking on quality either with a strong but lightweight Aluminium frame, Shimano gears and powerful disc brakes. We also have Dawes Hybrids available to order.

Have a need for Off-road speed! Why not choose one of Claud Butlers awesome range of Gravel Bikes.

A gravel bike is a bike that has many uses. Fast bridle way, Forrest roads or the odd bits of tarmac. It’s a bike capable of it all. Stick some mudguards on it and it will serve you well for light touring or bike packing. Adventures are what these bikes are made for. With the Claud Butler range we are confident that you’ll find a bike to Suit your budget.

We have the Radical in stock in 50 & 54cm sizes ( that’s small and medium) 58cm(L) available to order.

Freedom Day, Monday 19th July ‘21 – A light at the end of the tunnel?

As many of you know, we have continued to work throughout the Covid pandemic keeping you and your bikes rolling. Often working long hours to get your bike done and you out on the road/trails again. We thank everyone, customers old and new for your continued support. Bikes are our passion and we hope we’ve done our part in inspiring you.

With having the larger premises now we are going to be able to offer more. We’ve dabbled with bike sales over the years. However due to the difficulties regards sourcing them at the moment all our efforts have been towards Service/Repair and custom bike builds. Bikes may not be in stock, but we can preorder. We do also sell many accessories, tyres, tubes and components for different types of bike. All curated by cyclists who still ride. We don’t stock what we wouldn’t use ourselves.

We are professionally trained Cytech) and time served. With nearly 20 years of experience. We are fully insured, to protect your pride and joy. We all make mistakes (rarely😉) and we don’t want you to be disadvantaged in any way. We’ve been insured since day 1. Read our reviews on social media, google or our website. The heart of our ethos is the simple intention to help and inspire our local community and beyond.

Only with your continued support will we be able to continue offering the best independent bike shop services and advice. The pandemic has been tough on us all and continues to challenge businesses all over the north east. Where it is possible please support your local businesses and services. This money often goes back into the local economy. We spend in local shops where possible, supporting and protecting local jobs. Loyalty is a rarity these days but if we can encourage you to keep supporting those local businesses and Services that would be awesome. (Us included-of course)

We are fortunate in our geographical location, so much variety on and off-road Something for everyone. We have some of best and most beautiful countryside in the country on our doorsteps Get out on your bikes and appreciate it at a slower pace. Take in what life normally has you accelerating past.

We have messages coming from many different sources in this Information Age. When I grew up in the seventies there was a community spirit. During the pandemic I think some of these values have returned. That’s a good thing right? Looking after each other, being kind, shopping local. It seems that we are emerging from the restrictions but we still need to be kind and look after our nearest and dearest.

From Monday 21st and due to our concerns for yours and our continued safety.

We’d like to politely ask if you would still; observe wearing face coverings, hand washing, if there are two customers in the shop, please wait outside until at least one person leaves.

Use contactless payment methods or BACS transfer (details are in our emailed invoices).

We’ll continue to wear gloves while working on your bikes and regularly washing our hands.

Please do not come past the counter unless invited to do so by staff.

We respect your right to follow the above rules or choose not to as there will be no legal requirement. If there are other customers in the shop, please respect their right to be safe and well too. By working together in our community and beyond and supporting others we’ll get through this together.

Stay Safe , Stay Active – on 2 wheels of course, Stay Well, get your Vaccine, it really isn’t that bad. Look after yourself and others

Continuing the Journey.

When Steel Town Cycles came into being I started to remember the bike shops I first went to as a kid. What I remember, although a little more hazily now, was the care that every customer was given.

As an independent bicycle shop we choose bikes and accessories that we regard as good quality and at a reasonable cost for the majority of our customers. Recently we have made the decision after some considerable deliberation, 18 months worth, to stock a small selection of the excellent Squish lightweight children’s range. This is a very good alternative to Isla and Frog premium brands. To those that have visited the workshop in the last 2 1/2 years you know we don’t have the space for a full showroom with various sizes and colours. We can, however, guide you in your next bike purchase and offer support throughout your new journeys with ongoing service & repair to help you get the most from your bike.

We are also proud to supply bikes from Dawes, Claud Butler, Tifosi, Cinelli, and Orro; frames from Kinesis for those wanting to have a bike custom built. Other bikes/framesets may be available. It would be our pleasure to help you select a bike from our suppliers and order in that bike, assemble, fit you to it and advise you on accessories and the essentials to get you started. As always we advise on servicing to keep the bike in good condition. Above all, we’re local, so we can collect your bike and return it in the event that you are unable to get in to the shop. We’ll work with you to arrange things to be as easy as possible.

Further information can be found at www.squish.bike, dawescycles.com & claudbutler.co.uk

The workshop continues to get busier and we are delighted to see returning customers as well as those discovering us for the first time. Your bike is as important to us as our own. We don’t swamp the workshop with lots of jobs every week as we’d rather take the time and have fewer bikes to service to get yours right first time. Due to this we will on occasion have longer lead times. Thank you for your patience at these times and understanding that your bike needs to be done correctly and that takes time.

We hope to help you continue to get the most out of cycling and your bike for the years to come. Regular servicing is an important part of that, as well as cleaning and lubrication which is another aspect of bicycle care that we are happy to talk about – just ask the next time you are in the workshop. As we roll towards Spring we hope to see more of you getting out and enjoying the great countryside we have around us. To those already out and braving the cold, wind and rain – Chapeau!
