At Steel Town Cycles we want to promote participation in cycling at all ability levels. To that end we are proposing a twice -monthly group or groups ride. Meeting at the shop at 64 Derwent Street. Riding in a group is a great way to enjoy the social and motivating benefits of cycling, and it’s an understatement to say we’re spoilt in Consett for a choice of routes; sitting on the edge of the Pennines, the Coast-to-Coast, the Tyne Valley, the Durham Dales, Weardale and Northumberland, our ride will take in a variety of challenges and distances, depending on group size and interest on the day.
The first ride is to be on Sunday 12th March leaving from the Shop. The ride will be a road based ride of 2-3 hours. Some riders may want to complete a shorter route, which I’m happy to build in. A cafe stop will be part of the ride.
Apart from riding a bike as a child, my first adult bike was an MTB which I bought at BikeCo. in Consett. Once bitten by the cycling bug, my passion for cycling has taken me from the railway tracks around Lanchester, where I grew up, and club rides around the Durham Dales, to one of the highest peaks in the French Alps, the Galibier, an agonising dream come true! Group and solo rides were an excellent training opportunity for sportives, the Fred Whittington Challenge and the Bealach-Na-Bar (Bealach-Mor), and especially leading up to the cyclocross season, but most importantly developed by ability over the years and captured the social and community spirit of cycling which I am passionate about.
We aim to foster a community of cycling in our area and believe inclusivity is at the core of cycling. Please comment here if you would like to get involved.
